Before laying pavers or pathways, it is important to prepare the ground with a firm base of crushed rock gravel.
Without a firm sub base, your pathway or installation of Synthetic turf or pavers could become unstable and uneven.
The types of crushed rock gravel used to make a firm sub base are B Grade, Recycled concrete, Pavement base and Road Base. Use these crushed rocks in different applications as they all vary.
B Grade Crushed Rock
Firstly, 20mm B grade is generally used by landscapers as a base underneath concrete driveways or as a filling for potholes and driveways.
Use Recycled Concrete as an alternative, if the weather is too wet
B Grade crushed rock is a Class 3 rock and forms a firm base over soil, sand and soft surfaces.
Use this rock under blue stone dust for a base underneath synthetic turf.
Recycled Concrete or Pave Base
Next, Concretors and landscapers use Recycled concrete
as a base underneath concrete or pathways and provides a firm sub base for your project.
Made from building materials and may contain other items such as broken glass or wire from the building sites.
For this reason I recommend as a sub base and not a topping on the surface.
Another name for Recycled concrete may also be known as pavement base, although Pavement Base is generally a cheaper option.
A Grade Road Base
Lastly, use A grade Road Base in road making projects and pipe bedding as it compacts hard.
Road Base compacts well and makes a great base for underneath sand for paving or long driveways.
Although Road Base is also a Class 3 rock it is more expensive than the B Grade crushed rock.
